CeCe Winans Wants Her Music To Remind Others To Give Back

The 12-time Grammy winning musician shares her views on the power of music, her work with World Vision, and what it truly means to give back.

Amid the chaos of juggling meetings, raising kids, and running errands, Gospel singer CeCe Winans wants people to find time — even if it’s just a tiny moment — to give back to those around them.

For those who know Winans, this urge to give back and ultimately connect with others isn’t a surprise. Throughout her 30 year career, the Grammy-winning singer has worked to connect with others and teach them the word of God.

“There’s scriptures in the Bible that talk about being a blessing to the poor,” Winans tells Woman’s Day. “There’s a joy that you receive when you bless those who are less fortunate.”
This is not only a message Winans shares through her songs, but one she experiences daily as a partner with World Vision, a Christian humanitarian aid, development, and advocacy organization that helps children and adults escape poverty by teaching them skills and providing them with various resources.

But before she could commit to the cause, Winans wanted to see the organization in action. She eventually traveled to Ethiopia for an experience that would ultimately change her life forever.

“I had never seen people suffer like that before,” Winans says. “The first thing you do is repent. You just say, ‘Lord, forgive me for ever complaining for not having the right type of shoe or the right hairdo.’”
World Vision sponsors children by providing items like livestock, medicine, toys, and supplies to make long-lasting water sources for clean drinking water, starting as low as $25 dollars.

“(World Vision) has a long-term solution for poverty,” Winans says. “It’s a beautiful thing”

The organization, as Winans points out, truly emphasizes the point that donations and contributions don’t have to be large.

“When you bless one child, you really bless a community,” Winans says. “It’s amazing how small an amount you have to pay to really bring a change in a child’s life forever.”
