The Exodus of Gospel Artistes to Secular Music

Most Ghanaian musicians started from the church, either as singers in choir, praise leaders or as drummers, keyboardist, before moving over to secular music much later in their lives.

In the music industry, musicians often switch their genres of music in order to get their best fit and achieve their desired results.

THERE are times in the lives of music artistes when they feel a need to convert from recording and performing secular music and turn to recording and performing gospel music.

Oftentimes this is a result of a music artiste converting to Christianity. The news of gospel artists quitting for secular music is alarming. The cause of this is what many do not know.

Some see it as a brave and smart move, while others may see it otherwise. Some of these celebrities sang in church choirs as children, and others went on to direct their church choirs.

Few Gospel artistes complain that Christians do not support the ministry of the young ones.

Nobody comments, share and supports when you release a good material, it will just be friends and family until God opens a way and you get a favour somewhere.

Gospel artistes aside winning souls for Christ want their talent to be recognized but Christians who are to help them rather promote secular songs.

Some artistes admit that when you are doing all these gospel songs and nobody is appreciating it and even the Christians who have seen it will not help with your promotion, it makes them frustrated. It discourages them because they are not fulfilling all their aims as a gospel artiste.

Their works are not also appreciated by all church hence the need to venture into secular music where there are returns.

Indiscipline and lack of understanding made some gospel artiste not know that they are ministering not just to themselves but to others.

Kuami Eugene for instance, who used to be the African Prince of Worship and released gospel songs like “Heaven”, “No Jesus no Life”, “Nana Nyame” and others is now with Lynx Entertainment giving the world hit songs like Angela, Confusion and many other secular tunes.

It is not clear why the ‘Angela’ singer who loved the business of God at age 16 suddenly decided to be a secular musician.

On the other side, majority if not all Gospel musicians are merely doing the gospel for the money.

They don’t factor drawing people to worshipping God into the business plan. It has nothing to do with the faith of the person singing that song.

Some later complain of financial constraint and ditch gospel music to become secular artistes.

Most people will say the reason they quit gospel music for secular music is because gospel singers are broke, and that tells you that they came in with wrong motive.

Gospel music is a ministry, it is not an industry and that is what most gospel artiste don’t admit. You have the music industry, and then you have the ministry.

They all should understand that, because the rules are different in the ministry.
