Stormzy Reveals How His Faith In God Helped Him Deal With Painful Split With Ex-girlfriend Maya Jama

Stormzy has opened about he leaned on his Christian faith to help him through the difficult period of his life following his breakup with TV host Maya Jama.

The two broke up in 2020 after a four-year relationship, following rumours Stormzy was unfaithful.

The Grime artist denied the allegations but admitted there were areas in which he failed.

In a new BBC Two interview with Louis Theroux, due to air on Tuesday, Stormzy said:

“My break-up that was probably the biggest catalyst for growth as a man.

“It was like, OK, you made a mistake and you lose someone you loved, someone you cared for, someone who is special to you.

“That’s probably the biggest loss a man can have, isn’t it? Away from someone passing away, that’s the biggest loss you can have”.

He added: “Long story short, I learned that if I don’t want to feel like that again, and if I believe that God will bless me again with an amazing woman and a family and marriage and all of that kind of thing, I have to do all the necessary work to never be in that situation again.”

The 29-year-old admitted that dating is difficult for him, as it’s hard to determine if a woman is attracted to him because of his fame. And on the other hand, some women are put off by the limelight.

He told Theroux that his desire for marriage and a family is something he’s left in God’s hands.

“I’m still trying to work out the solution,” he said. “I’ll just wait for God to present me with my situation with my woman. I’m all out of ideas.”

In the series of interviews, Theroux goes to church with Stormzy, in which he participates in worship with his mum and sister. He also revealed that he reads the Bible regularly at home.

The rap star is set to release his first album in three years in November called This Is What I Mea’, which he admitted to feeling extremely “proud” of.

Speaking to BBC Radio 2, he explained: “I keep calling it a soul album. I don’t call it a soul album in the sense like Aretha Franklin or like a genre. It’s just something that came from my soul, which sounds really cheesy, but that’s the only way I can describe it.

“People say is it a rap album, is it a grime album, is it a gospel album. I’m like, ‘Yo, it’s just come feelings that came out from my soul’. Yeah, we’ve just made something that I hope touches someone else’s soul, do you know what I mean?”

In May 2020, he was given a Sandford St Martin award for his contribution to the public understanding of religion.

His faith-filled song ‘Blinded by your grace’ soared into the top ten of the UK’s Singles Chart back in 2017,

– Lord we pray that you will continue to use celebrities to proclaim your great name.

– Thank you for being the comfort and strength we need in diffuclt times.

– Amen.
